In a recent video, Apoorva Mukhija shared her story of getting homeless after the controversy of the ‘India’s Got latent’ show. While she was sharing her story of getting homeless in a day and what struggles she has faced as a single woman, it raises a concern about how easy it is for landlords to let a single and independent woman leave the house because of an issue and the reputation of society. But do they ever think about the amount of stress those women face, living single?
Police Visits Make Appoorva Homeless
During the recent controversy of India’s Got latent show, Apoorva Mukhija was also involved in saying some inappropriate statements during the show. Recently, she found herself without a home after a police visit to her Mumbai apartment. The visit was related to this ongoing controversy and was a normal visit to clarify some details. The police came to give her a notice and summon her for questioning about the show.
Building Management Raises Objection
The building management expressed worries about Apoorva’s presence in society as a whole shortly after the police visit. The police visit, they claimed, was evidence of “why we don’t rent out to single women.” According to reports, it was the police and other management who warned the landlord that this may happen again if they allow such single women to live in the residential buildings.
Consequently, despite having lived in her flat for a year without any problems, Apoorva was forced to leave. In an interview, Apoorva described her experience: “The building management complained that ‘cops are coming to this building, it’s wrong, that’s why we don’t allow bachelors, that’s why we don’t rent out to single women.'” The police had come to my house to post a notice and summon me. Thus, I was somehow only in charge of removing feminism from that structure. So I was instructed to leave by the owner.
Facing Threats and Online Abuse
Apoorva Mukhija struggles do not just end here. Once her video was viral, and the news of this controversy spread widely, she was trolled negatively. She was abused and threatened online. People would warn her that they may come to their home, and this was a very shivering moment for a woman who lives alone. In her video, she told of how people would send her messages that tha they may come to her home, for which she said, “I was scared of getting attacked. I started reading my messages and they were all about of how people want to rape me, throw acid on me and stuff like that” This sounds so scary. She could not return to her own house.
